What is success? Is it simply a teenager learning the difference between silverbeet and silverside; learning a more harmonious way to communicate; or perhaps success is when a community provides a fun and friendly environment for youth to develop into motivated positive members of society.
Well, in Helensville just a short drive from the Auckland Business District, there is such a place. An outstanding 5000sq ft venue tailored specifically to the needs of youth has been created. A place where teenagers can gain friendships, skills and a real sense of belonging and involvement.
Since 2000 Te Awaroa Youth Club had been providing a vast range of activities and programmes with the intention of assisting local teenagers in their personal and social development during what is known to be the ‘toughest years of a persons life’.
When you walk through the large double doors, of what was once a part of the Takapuna post office, the vast array of top notch equipment for use is hard to ignore. The interior decorating has taken on a life of its own reflecting a much loved second home to many of the 300 plus teenagers that have frequented here. In fact, over the years dozens of local youth have spent almost every afternoon hanging out playing pool, doing homework in the computer suite, having fun creating in the art room or jamming in the sound proof music space. It’s astounding the level of fellowship enjoyed when a group of youth make a scrumptious meal for those that happen to be hungry.
Te Awaroa Youth Club is about pro-actively offering help, support and inspiration to teenagers. It is about saying "Well Done" and "You Can Do It". It is about aiding youth to acknowledge their options and broaden their horizons.
